The base wine of Ornellaia\u2026. OK, but a phenomenal basic wine!<\/h2>\n

The Tenuta dell\u2019Ornellaia Le Volte is the \u201cbase wine\u201d of Ornellaia. At least, that is what they call it. Naturally, it is more accessible than its big brothers Le Serre Nuove and Ornellaia. It is made to be drunk as a young wine. The Tenuta dell\u2019Ornellaia Le Volte is largely Merlot, but the rest of the blend is bottled with a Sangiovese<\/a> en Cabernet Sauvignon.<\/p>\n

The vines are planted at 60 to 80 meters above sea level. The soils show a mix of deep clay, red sand, and rocks. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in steel tanks, and the wine ages partly in barrique and partly in cement for 10 months. This vintage is very primary and simple, with bright high notes of raspberry and wild blueberry, followed by some almond and toasted nut. As the text on the back label suggests, the wine strives for a so-called Mediterranean flavour profile that presents the cherry softness of the Merlot against the herbaceousness of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the blackberry or blue flowers of the Sangiovese. This wine also shows a distinctly Italian side, thanks to that food-friendly freshness. We love serving this with de pasta Bolognese.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia\u2026 an institution!<\/h3>\n

The company's production philosophy is focused on one goal: quality. Every choice is therefore of utmost importance and implies absolute attention to detail. No shortcuts are allowed at any stage of the production process. This is the way of working. This is how they manage to obtain the best grapes. Every vintage, time and again.<\/p>\n

The grapes from each separate vineyard ferment separately, so that each base wine contributes to the creation of the final blend. Thanks to the specific conditions of the vineyard of origin: combination of soil, climatic exposure and of course the type of grape. Only after a year of aging in the barrel are the base wines blended in accordance with the two main criteria: the expression of elegance inherent in the spirit of Ornellaia and the style of the vintage.
