Monasterio de Corias Guilfa Tinto \u2013 Northern Spanish red wine<\/h2>\n

Monasterio de Corias Guilfa Tinto is a characterful red wine from the northwestern part of Spain. It is the flagship wine of Bodegas Monasterio de Corias. The grapes for this Guilfa come from the oldest vines in the vineyard. Low yields, but a beautifully refined taste. The style of this wine is fresh, refined, and dry. Totally different from the heavy, sun-baked red wine for which Spain is known.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This wine comes from the D.O.P. Vino de Calidad de Cangas, a protected designation of origin in the rugged, Atlantic climate of Asturias. The area is characterized by steep vineyards, cool temperatures, and high rainfall, resulting in fresh acidity and a unique wine style that clearly differs from the more southerly Spanish wine regions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Monasterio Corias Guilfa is a Spanish red blend of two very special grape varieties: Verdejo Tinto and Carrasquin. The wine has aged for many months in oak barrels.<\/div>\n

This wine has undergone a long maturation and remains fresh and elegant. On the nose, you recognize Guilfa Tinto aromas of ripe red fruit (such as cherries and berries), along with earthy and smoky notes, subtle spices, and light hints of vanilla from the oak aging. On the palate, the wine feels soft and elegant, with a good balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The finish is persistent and once again reveals that deep, mineral structure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Asturias: an unknown wine region in Northern Spain with beautiful wines<\/h3>\n

Asturias as a wine region\u2026 that is special! So special that even in Spain, Asturias is only known for the Picos de Europa, the beautiful, tranquil coast, cider, and above all, for its abundance of cheese. Oddly enough, this region is not known at all for wine. And that is strange, considering that viticulture was practiced here centuries ago by monks. However, Asturias wine is slowly coming into the picture, and quite rightly so! After all, very special \u2018native\u2019 grapes grow in Asturias, such as Albar\u00edn blanco, Albar\u00edn tinto, Verdejo negro, and Carrasqu\u00edn, alongside a very unique, deliciously fresh variant of Mencia. It is suspected that there are even more undiscovered varieties\u2026 In this region, quality takes precedence over quantity. It is hard work in viticulture here: the vineyards are very small, situated high and steeply, and often difficult to reach via narrow mountain roads. Furthermore, the climate is very unpredictable, with harsh, sometimes long winters of snow and ice, and significantly fewer hours of sunshine than in the rest of Spain. As a result, the grapes can only be harvested late in the autumn, with all the associated weather risks. Nevertheless, these Atlantic wines, also known as \u2018cool-climate\u2019 wines, represent the future of viticulture in Spain: the soil is fantastic, the grapes are exceptional, and the weather here is \u2013 as the name suggests \u2013 \u2018cool\u2019, yet with sufficient hours of sunshine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
