\nAs a tribute to its rugged power, its smoothness, and the debt it owes to the soil from which it rises, Masseto is named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay called \u2018massi\u2019. Every true wine lover must drink a Masseto at least once in their life.<\/p>\nOn the flank of a hill near Bolgheri, a small village on the Tuscan coast overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, stands this magical vineyard. Here, they produce a wine born almost by chance. The potential of this slope remained untapped for a long time and was only recognized in the 1980s, when, despite all predictions, advice, and local tradition, the first vines were planted. In the decades that followed, the vineyard revealed many of its secrets, but there are just as many left to be discovered.<\/p>\n
The 2017 vintage presents itself with an almost black color. The nose reveals a rich and ripe expression of concentrated black fruit, with hints of spices and licorice. On the palate, the wine manages to combine great intensity and ripeness of fruit with a remarkable sense of balance and freshness. The tannins are silky, the texture velvety, and the finish is endless.
\nAnd persistent fruitiness and a lively acidity that provide a final touch of freshness. Although it comes from one of the warmest vintages, 2017 is a very typical Masseto in its unmistakable combination of richness and elegance.<\/p>\n
The 2017 Masseto received 97\/100 points from the Wine Advocate (Parker) and 98\/100 from James Suckling.<\/p>\n
Winemaker Axel Heinz described the Masseto process as follows:<\/h3>\n
Making Masseto is an exercise in balance; one feels like a tightrope walker always on the edge of an abyss.
\nThe clayey soils in themselves represent contradictions: a capacity to store large quantities of water, to release it very gently.
\nSoil that is cold and wet in a rainy year, but becomes hard as rock during a dry summer. This creates a barrier for roots that struggle to penetrate deep into the subsoil.<\/p>\n
A soil in which, with a low planting density, a level of power has been achieved that one would normally expect from a vineyard with a high density.
\nThe vines of Masseto seem to be constantly wrestling with the elements, often on the verge of collapse. Yet somehow they are always able to resist and develop. This yields an abundance of fruit with incredible concentration and flavour. A rare combination of luscious ripeness and exuberant concentration. It somehow manages to retain its complexity and freshness.
\nEach individual vintage leaves its mark on the Masseto character. Like a masterpiece of music that sounds different, just like the artist who plays it.<\/p>\n
Volume 2017<\/h3>\n
2017 was one of the hottest and driest vintages in recent history. Due to an unusually mild winter with temperatures 3\u00b0C above average, budding occurred two weeks earlier than normal. Apart from a short period of cold weather towards the end of April, the entire growing season was dominated by warm and dry weather. This led to reduced canopy development. Flowering and fruit set proceeded well, but due to the lack of water clusters, the grapes remained small. July and August remained hot and virtually rain-free. Fortunately, there were sufficient cool nights to allow the vines to recover from the heat. The fruit was able to continue ripening without stress, maintaining excellent acidity in the grapes.
\nThe harvest started early and was the fastest ever, with only three days of picking between August 24 and 30.<\/p>\n
