Niepoort has been a family brand for more than half a century. Five generations have followed since Franciscus Marius Niepoort came to Portugal in 1842 to found the Niepoort company. Without land or vineyards, he began his career as a port wine merchant. In the second generation, under the leadership of Eduard Karel, Niepoort established itself as a flourishing business. The third generation was led by Eduard Marius Niepoort, considered an exceptionally skilled natural scientist. In the fourth generation, Niepoort overcame a period of financial difficulties.
