Typical wine from tuff soil<\/h2>\n

The Vesevo Greco di Tufo is a wine from the Campania wine region in southern Italy near the city of Naples. Perhaps the region's most special white wine, made primarily from the grape variety that shares its name. The name Tufo not only refers to one of the villages where the wine comes from, but also to the type of soil on which the village and the vineyards are located. Known as tuff in English \u2013 it is made of ash ejected during an eruption and then compacted. a very special airy soil that is stiff with minerals.<\/p>\n

All interesting, but what is that Vesevo Greco di Tufo like in the glass? That's what we want to know, right? The wine is lemon yellow in color with a strong, aromatic scent of ripe white fruit such as pears with honeyed almond bitters. There is also a hint of light sulfur aromas. This of course refers to the weathered volcanic soil where the Greco is planted. On the palate, this wine has aromas of yellow peaches and plum and a clearly present mineral character. In addition, it has a mouth-filling body and good length at the finish. Truly a wine with its own distinct character. Be crazy and order a bottle. Also bottled in a nice special little round bottle.<\/p>\n

Volcanic character<\/h3>\n

Greco di Tufo wines are distinguished by the unique characteristics of the sulphur- and tuff-rich volcanic and clay soils; it is believed that these give the wine its typical aromas and mineral complexity. The refreshing, crisp white wines are known for their aromatic notes of lemons, pears and roasted almonds and a lingering mineral aftertaste. The wines are generally at their best within three years of bottling. They are delicious with fish from the grill with green herbs in the belly.<\/a> They also go well with a dish of fried shrimp with garlic and a small dash of Pernod.<\/p>\n

Tufo Info<\/h3>\n

The Greco di Tufo grape is a mutant of Greco Bianco introduced by the Pelasgians, a very ancient people from Thessaly in Greece. The vines from which Greco di Tufo wines are made are grown at altitudes of 450 to 500 meters, where the milder temperatures allow grapes to enjoy the persistent summer sun without heat stress (so that their photosynthesis is interrupted and ripening stops) This allows them to ripen without losing too much acid, an effect that is enhanced by the higher daily temperature variation here.<\/p>\n

The best vineyards of Greco di Tufo are found on the volcanic hills of the Avellino province in central Campania. Only eight villages can legally claim to make Greco di Tufo: Tufo, Montefusco, Petruro Irpino, Chianche, Torrioni, Altavilla, Irpina and Prata di Principato Ultra. The appellation was given DOCG status in 2003. The wines must contain at least 85 percent Greco di Tufo grapes.
