De Kleine Schorre Auxerrois from Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, The Netherlands has really become a household name! One of the Netherlands’ finest wineries with insanely good wines. It has also gained fame on the international stage; this Auxerrois has been served in KLM’s Business Class for years! A beautiful piece of Dutch pride! The distinctive feature of this wine is its purity and power in taste. Delightfully floral, juicy apple and a hint of pear, a briny minerality and fine spiciness. Made to accompany salty delicacies of Zeeland such as oysters, mussels and Eastern Scheldt lobster, but can also be enjoyed perfectly as an aperitif.
The history of Wijnhoeve de Kleine Schorre is still relatively young; in fact, the wine estate has only been established since 2001. In collaboration with the renowned Luxembourg wine company Cep d’Or, De Kleine Schorre in Dreischor began its adventure. The goal; to make wine that should seamlessly complement all the good things Zeeland has to offer. From oysters and flatfish to samphire. The rigorous selection of grapes resulted in the Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Rivaner and Auxerrois. The vineyard has since grown into one of the largest vineyards in the Netherlands with no less than 14 hectares and over 63,000 vines! When the grapes have reached optimum ripeness and the hour of harvest has arrived, the vineyard relies on volunteers to pick the grapes. At the winery, the grapes are fermented in Stainless Steel tanks. This allows the wine to retain the freshness and all the beauty of the grapes. You can taste the love and passion for the product in the wine!
Auxerrois grapes are mainly found in Alsace and Luxembourg. Yet this grape is excellent for the Zeeland climate! The grape combines its beautiful acidity with a powerful and spicy flavour. Another advantage is that the grape does not ripen too late. Kleine Schorre’s vineyards lie on an old shell bank. This ensures excellent drainage; precipitation washes away very quickly. For a wet country like the Netherlands, this is a very nice bonus! Moreover, Schouwen-D(r)uiveland is one of the sunniest places in the Netherlands, which means the grapes ripen well here and diseases have less of a chance. All in all, the best conditions for the Auxerrois grape.
