Cherries, black pepper, dark fruit, vanilla, dark chocolate, a refined spiciness, and a sultry fruit note. Delicious! And so it should be coming from the oldest wine-producing country in the world. After all, wine has been made here for over 8,000 years! The Bedoba Saperavi is a pure 100% Saperavi from the Kakheti region in Georgia. This unique grape grows in the vineyards of the Konchosvili family.
Swiss winemaker Thierry Fontannaz drew inspiration from centuries-old Georgian wine traditions. Fascinated by this authentic way of winemaking, he created the Bedoba – a wine that bridges the gap between tradition and modern craftsmanship. For those seeking something special and truly authentic, this is an ideal choice. In our taste profile, this wine falls under: soepel en vol.
Robust, spicy, piquant, and juicy – that is how the Bedoba Saperavi makes its entrance. Blackcurrants predominate, supported by a rich, spicy structure. The power and intensity of the Saperavi grape are clearly noticeable, yet floral notes bring an elegant refinement.
The finish reveals a beautiful ripeness that enhances the complexity. The minerality of the black slate soil gives the wine its unique signature. This is a wine with body and character, yet at the same time accessible and inviting. Perfect to pair with:
The wine estate is located just north of the Alazani River, at an altitude of 400 meters. The wine cellars date back to 1533 (!) and traditional Kakheti wines have been produced and sold here ever since. Today, Nugzar Ksovreli of the Kakheti Wine Company is responsible for the iconic Saperavis from this area.
The Konchosvili family vineyards are situated in the heart of Georgia’s most famous wine region. This terroir is known as the ideal place for the Saperavi grape. Climate, soil, and centuries-old knowledge combine to create wines with a distinctly authentic character. Thierry Fontannaz added his Swiss precision and craftsmanship to this.
The soil consists largely of black slate with high carbonate content – precisely what gives the Bedoba Saperavi its minerality and unique style. The vines are over 30 years old and are cultivated sustainably and organically. The grapes are carefully hand-picked to ensure top quality.
After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine continues to mature. A portion goes into oak barrels, while another portion undergoes malolactic fermentation in steel. The final blend therefore consists of various aging processes. After bottling, the Bedoba rests in the bottle for another 12 months for optimal development.
This Bedoba is the perfect reflection of two worlds: centuries-old Georgian wine culture and modern European expertise. Georgia is rightly regarded as the cradle of wine, with a tradition dating back more than 8,000 years.
The Saperavi grape is one of the most authentic and expressive grapes in the world. In the hands of Thierry Fontannaz, a wine is created that honors tradition while simultaneously meeting contemporary quality standards. This is a wine for adventurous enthusiasts – a journey of discovery in the glass and a brilliant introduction to the rich wine culture of Georgia.
