    How is non-alcoholic wine made?

    Winemakers are eager to capitalize on the alcohol-free movement and are therefore investing heavily in the development of new techniques. The most well-known techniques are vacuum distillation and reverse osmosis. Alcohol-free wine starts as regular wine from which the alcohol is subsequently removed. Wine is produced through the fermentation of grape sugars, which are converted into alcohol. Whereas in the past wine was heated to evaporate the alcohol, everything is now processed at low temperatures. This preserves many characteristic aromas, and the alcohol-free wine tastes virtually identical to the alcoholic version. With reverse osmosis, the alcohol is filtered out of the wine using a membrane filter, and vacuum distillation—as the name suggests—vacuums the wine in stages, thereby removing the alcohol. In this way, both preserve much of the wine's character.

    Alcohol-free makes you happy

    Alcohol-free wine really isn't as bad as most people think. However, it will never be 100% the same as alcoholic wine. This is simply due to the aromas that alcohol brings with it. Compare it, for example, to a piece of sweetener versus a sugar cube. They look similar, but they are just slightly different. Alcohol often gives the drink a sweeter taste and can therefore balance the acidity in a wine. In wines with a high alcohol content, it adds extra body to the mouthfeel, such as a richness, and can also impart a touch of bitterness in the finish. By removing the alcohol, these effects are also eliminated, resulting in a completely different taste experience.
