Many people choose dry white wines over other types. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling enjoy great popularity worldwide, as wine lovers appreciate them for their fresh flavors and easy pairing with food. Dry white wine can be enjoyed all year round, but it is especially refreshing in the summer. Moreover, there is a suitable variety for every palate.
A dry white wine contains no more than 4-5 grams of residual sugar per liter. As a result, the acidity comes through more clearly, giving a dry sensation in the mouth. Wines with 12 grams of residual sugar are called semi-dry. Above that level, we speak of sweet. A Muscat wine, for example, contains as much as 125 grams of residual sugar.
Sweet and fruity are two different concepts. A fruity white wine with aromas of peach or ripe pear does not have to be sweet at all. A good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is full of passion fruit and gooseberry, and yet it is bone dry.
These are the three most popular white wines in the world. Here are the key differences:
Chardonnay grows all over the world. In Burgundy, it is mineral-rich and crisp. In California and Australia, it ripens into tropical richness. Young Chardonnay smells of green apple and citrus. With oak aging, it acquires a buttery and toasted character.
Chenin Blanc is common in the Loire Valley. It produces dry, semi-dry, sparkling, and sweet wines. Typical aromas are floral, apple, and pear with fresh acidity. In South Africa, it is called Steen.
Gewürztraminer reaches its peak in Alsace. It produces floral, spicy wines ranging from bone-dry to decadently sweet. In cooler regions such as Northern Italy and Oregon, it is fresher and lighter in style.
Grüner Veltliner accounts for more than a third of all vineyards in Austria. Young versions display green grape, apple, peach, and minerals. Top versions age in oak and come from low-yield vineyards.
Muscat is characterized by penetrating orange aromas. It produces light sparkling wines such as Moscato d'Asti and rich dessert wines such as Muscat Beaumes de Venise. Australian Muscat is the most opulent variety.
Pinot Blanc resembles Chardonnay, but is lighter and more elegant. Fine varieties come from Alsace, Northern Italy, and Oregon. It ranges from mildly spicy to citrusy. Pinot Blanc is best enjoyed without oak aging.
Pinot Grigio produces light, fresh white wines without much oak or alcohol. The most popular varieties come from the Tre Venezie in Italy. In Alsace and Oregon, it produces fuller wines with a touch of fruity sweetness.
Riesling varies from bone-dry and stony to floral and sweet. The greatest Rieslings come from the Moselle, Rheinhessen, and Alsace. Washington State and Australia also produce excellent varieties — from dry with shellfish to beautiful Eisweins.
Roussanne grows in the South of France. It is full-bodied with notes of lime and citrus. Its fresh acidity makes it a fine blending partner for Marsanne.
Sauvignon Blanc thrives in diverse wine regions. In the Loire, it has a spicy, grassy sharpness with mineral undertones. In New Zealand, intense citrus and passion fruit aromas dominate. Late-harvest varieties form the basis for great sweet wines such as Sauternes.
Sémillon produces dry white wines with soft, grassy aromas. It also appears as world-class late-harvest dessert wines. In Sauternes, it is classically blended with Sauvignon Blanc.
Viognier is intensely aromatic with aromas of apricot, peach, and citrus peel. The finest Viognier comes from Condrieu in the Northern Rhône. It also pairs well as a blend with Syrah, where it adds fresh floral notes.
