Chardonnay is one of the most versatile and popular white grape varieties in the world. This grape is known for its adaptability to different climates and soil types, resulting in a wide range of wine styles. The grape originally comes from France. The aromas of Chardonnay vary depending on where it is grown and how the wine is made. So, what exactly is Chardonnay? Well, in cooler climates, such as in Chablis, France, Chardonnay shows fresh, mineral notes with citrus and green apple. In warmer regions, such as California or Australia, riper aromas come forward, such as tropical fruit, peach and pineapple.
The Burgundy region in France is considered the birthplace of the Chardonnay grape and plays a crucial role in the world of wine. Wines made from the Chardonnay grape are usually dry. However, they may be made with slightly lower acidity and a higher alcohol content. Combined with many tropical fruit aromas, these characteristics can make the wines come across as slightly sweet, due to a full body and fewer fresh notes. Whether a Chardonnay is sweet or dry therefore depends on the production method and the style of the winemaker.
Chardonnay is a perfect wine to pair with many different dishes. Fresh, unoaked Chardonnays go excellently with light fish dishes, shellfish and goat cheese. Fuller, oak-aged Chardonnays pair well with creamy pasta dishes, roasted chicken and fatty fish such as salmon. Well-known examples of Chardonnay wines include Chablis from France, Meursault and full-bodied Chardonnays from Napa Valley in California. Thanks to its versatility and popularity, Chardonnay remains a favourite among both novice and experienced wine lovers.
