Fresh citrus, juicy peach, and mirabelle plum. This white Yves Cuilleron Saint-Péray Les Potiers is incredibly elegant and clearly made to be savored. And that is exactly what we did when we tasted it for the first time! It consists of an equal blend of Marsanne and Roussanne grapes, typical of Northern Rhône white wines, grown on gently sloping, southwest-facing hillsides around the village. Saint-PérayAfter manual harvesting, the grapes are pressed immediately. The must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, undergoes malolactic fermentation, and then ages for nine months “sur lie” in wooden barrels and large foudres.
On the nose, it presents fresh aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, and ripe stone fruit, subtly complemented by notes of mirabelle plum and a hint of flint – a beautiful blend of fruit and minerality. On the palate, the wine remains crisp and energetic: lively acidity and a crunchy minerality carry flavors of peach, soft spices, and lime, combined with a light hint of salinity. The texture feels refined and supple due to the long contact with the lees. The finish is long, dry, and fresh.
This wine pairs excellently with:
Yves Cuilleron He is one of the most renowned winemakers of the northern Rhône. His vineyards are scattered across prestigious appellations such as Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Péray. The vineyards where Les Potiers originates are situated on gravelly, alluvial soils around Saint-Péray. This poor, well-draining soil produces wines with tension, precision, and minerality.
The grapes are harvested by hand, after which vinification proceeds in a fully typical “nature-friendly” manner: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, without fining agents. After fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. Subsequently, it ages for nine months on the lees in barriques and large foudres. During this period, there is no bâtonnage or racking — everything happens slowly so that the wine retains the pure expression of terroir and grape.
Blending Marsanne and Roussanne in equal parts creates a wine that possesses structure, body, and finesse simultaneously: Marsanne provides occasional power and spiciness, while Roussanne contributes floral notes, acidity, and elegance. The result is a white Rhône with both calm and energy.
