Marsala from Sicily. Totally super trendy again!

Let's be honest! Fortified wines are struggling to find a place in your cupboard anymore. Who still drinks dry sherry? Oh well, perhaps you still enjoy a glass. Port. But when it comes to Madeira or Marsala, a big question mark often goes into the picture. They have actually completely disappeared from the view of the average consumer. That is a shame, because many seasoned wine lovers hold these drinks in very high regard due to their refinement and great complexity! Just give this Lombardo Fine Marsala a try! Lightly chilled or with some ice as an aperitif, but also delicious with some soft, nutty cheeses such as Maaslander, Comté, Morbier, and Gruyère. Serve it with some nut crackers or a few ripe figs, and the perfect pairing is complete.

So what is this Lombardo Fine Marsala? We could, of course, say it's because it's so deliciously sweet. But that is too simple. It is actually a lightly fortified wine that has been aged in wood for a long time, giving it those wonderfully complex oxidative notes on the nose. A beautiful golden and amber color. On the nose, complex aromas: dried apricot, Sultana raisins, baked apple, roasted notes, and at the same time a slightly salty touch. And that fresh acidity makes it so deliciously exciting and easy to drink. We actually think it's also really tasty with Dutch apple pie. A delicious treat that you really must try. You will be amazed at how delicious a Lombardo Fine Marsala is.

What exactly is Lombardo Fine Marsala, and where does it come from?

Marsala is an Italian fortified wine that is made in the area of Marsala on the western part of Sicily. A fortified wine means that the fermentation of the grape must is stopped by the addition of pure alcohol. As a result, a clearly discernible residual sugar remains in the taste of the Lombardo Fine Marsala as well.

In principle, the wine can be made from the following grape varieties: Grillo, Catarrato, Inzolia, Damaschino, Pignatello, and Nero d’Avola.
The flavors range from secco (dry), demisecco (semi-dry) to dolce (sweet). The Lombardo Fine Marsala we offer here is a Dolce.

When the wine of a particular vintage is ready, it is incorporated into a solera system, similar to that used for sherry. Marsala therefore has no vintage year, as it is a blend of several, sometimes many, years. As a result, a specific type or brand is very consistent in taste and quality.

Depending on the solera system used (just like with sherry), there are different age categories. From young to old, these are: Fine, Superiore, Superiore Riserva, Vergine, and the oldest, Stravecchio. The aging then varies from 1 to 5 and sometimes even more than 20 years. Marsala is a DOC-classified wine and pairs very well with cheeses. Marsala is a main ingredient of the classic Italian dessert tiramisu. And who doesn't love Tiramisu?
