South African Straw Wine: Dessert Wine of the Year 2022!

The Mullineux Straw Wine dessert wine looks like liquid gold in the glass! The luminous, luscious, and clear golden color reflects beautifully in the light when swirling the glass. This also brings out the complex aromas of sun-dried apricots, limes, honeycomb, marzipan, and almonds. The mouthfeel also reveals these complex aromatic layers with a well-balanced acidity. A long, luscious finish of dried apricots with a delightfully fresh edge completes the taste sensation. A very fine accompaniment to desserts or pastries! Serve the wine chilled at around 9 to 11°C.

The Mullineux Straw Wine has been named Dessert Wine of the Year 2022 by Perswijn!

Harvest and vinification of the Mullineux Straw Wine

The dessert wine consists of 100% hand-harvested Chenin Blanc grapes. The grapes are harvested when they have reached the traditional ripeness level of a dry wine. Subsequently, the grapes dry for 16 to 30 days on straw mats, outdoors in the shade. This process ensures that moisture evaporates naturally from the grapes, leaving behind concentrated sugars, acids, and flavor. When the grapes have partially shriveled into raisins, they are crushed, pressed whole, and transferred to old 225-liter barrels. Slow fermentation, lasting 11 months, creates a complex layering of texture and flavor. Fermentation is stopped naturally, and the wine is then racked again, blended, and bottled unfiltered.

    Mullineux Vineyard

The Chenin Blanc grapes of this dessert wine come from the two oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards of the Mullineux domain. A 44-year-old vineyard with granite soil on the Paardeberg and a 40-year-old vineyard with schist soil on the Kasteelberg. The granite soil consists of a sandy top layer that ensures perfect drainage. Meters beneath this sand layer is a thick layer of clay that releases water like a sponge to the roots in the dry summer. The grapes from this granite soil are pure with granite aromas and fine acidity. The grapes from the schist soil have a more earthy character. Well structured with good acidity that forms the basis of the blend.

This straw wine belongs to the Swartland appellation in the Western Cape of South Africa.
