For years, the Bogle winemakers have been searching for vines ranging in age from 60 to 80 years old for the Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel. They do exist, but you have to search for them with a flashlight here in the USA. These gnarled bush vines have very low yields (few bunches on a plant) but consist of very small clusters of fruit with a very high concentration of aromas, creating an explosion of scent and flavor in the glass. The Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel (the same grape as Primitivo in Italy) has an intense ruby color and tears heavily; a strikingly spicy nose with black plums and a meaty, somewhat smoky undertone (something like smoked horse meat!!). The Old Vine Zinfandel is a wine of substantial stature with complex aromas of pomegranate, raspberries, bell pepper, anise, peppercorns, and vanilla. Consequently, the wine was aged in American oak barrels for 12 months.
In the meantime, we recommend it for, well, just kidding …… Indian Kip Tandoori! The Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel also pairs well with a good grilled sausage with caramelized onions and bell peppers. It also scores highly with Gorgonzola cheese from Italy. Well, and of course, it's also great with an All American Pizza. Anything goes!
At Bogle, they realize that caring for the land and preserving its vitality is essential not only for the family but for the entire world. Future generations must be able to enjoy many harvests for centuries to come. They were also awarded the Green Medal Leader Award 2018. This is a recognition of environmentally friendly, socially just, and economically viable sustainability practices. An achievement to be proud of. Bogle Vineyards operates organically. The Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel is certified by various bodies: California Certified Sustainable Winegrowing, Lodi Rules Certified Green Certificate, and the Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Certificate. They sustainably manage 1,200 hectares of vineyards.
The story behind the pheasant on the labels is based on coincidence. The family wanted a label that reflected the region of the vineyards. The family got in touch with the artist Paul Lorenzi, who was making sketches for wine labels one evening. And suddenly, that beautiful pheasant walked onto the terrace. The label for the Bogle wines was then finished in no time!
