At Simonsig, the Shiraz grape and Cabernet sauvignon are no strangers. They are the flagship wines of the house and, incidentally, perform remarkably well in the South African climate. No wonder the winemakers at Simonsig decided to create a blend of the successful Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape provides a creamy and fleshy structure with blackcurrant aromas. Shiraz makes the wine red-fruity and juicy. The result is a wonderfully smooth wine: the widely acclaimed Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz! Lighter meat dishes and braai pairs effortlessly with this wine.
For many, South Africa is a country of the New World. However, when you consider that brothers François and Johan Malan represent the tenth generation of winemakers in the family, you would hardly dare call South Africa a New World wine country anymore.
Simonsig is progressive in many respects. In the late 1980s, winemaker Frans Malan was one of the first to bottle his own wine. New grape varieties and cellar techniques were introduced. Simonsig was also the first winery to market a sparkling wine, the South African answer to Champagne. Frans Malan rightly emerged as one of the defining pioneers in Stellenbosch prior to the major breakthrough in the 1990s. Simonsig benefits from the variety of terroirs and microclimates of Stellenbosch and cultivates a range of grape varieties on over 200 hectares. From these, Simonsig creates wonderfully beautiful blends such as this Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz.
Maritime climate with relatively dry, warm summers and mild winters. The red-colored soil is rich in clay and minerals. After the grapes are harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine undergoes no wood aging, allowing lighter meat dishes and young salty cheeses to pair effortlessly with this wine.
