At this wine estate, they make only one wine. But a very good one at that! Here you taste the essence of the southern Rhône! The Raspail-Ay Gigondas performs brilliantly here. Floral notes accentuate red berries, black cherries, garrigue, black pepper, and liquorice on the nose, while in the full flavour, dark notes of espresso, black olive, and chocolate predominate. It is rich in tannins but ripe, with a creamy, velvety feel in the mouth and a long, savory finish. Extraordinarily promising, it should drink well for more than a decade. Yields were only half normal due to mildew, about 15-16 hectoliters per hectare. This results in enormous concentration!
The Raspail-Ay Gigondas blend of 70% Grenache, 23% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre, all aged in old foudres, A classic Gigondas
Christophe Ay and his sister Anne-Sophie represent the seventh generation at this venerable family business. They took over the estate from Dominique Ay. When we asked him whether he was now going to produce a higher cuvée, unlike his father, his firm answer was: no! A highly respectable opinion. Domaine Raspail-Ay produces one of the most iconic wines of all of Gigondas. The 19 hectares form a continuous block of vines, halfway up the slope on the rugged clay/limestone terraces, the best terroir of the Gigondas appellation. The imposing rock formation of the Dentelles de Montmirail looms in the background. Everything about Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas is traditional: a classic blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre; vinification in concrete, and aging in large oak floors. Besides a small quantity of Gigondas Rosé, only one wine is produced – The Raspail-Ay Gigondas. There is no Côtes du Rhône, no ‘Réserve’, ‘Vieilles Vignes’, or the special bottling of new oak cuvée. Only one wine, consistently ranked among the top wines produced in the appellation year after year.
