Barón de Ley Rioja Reserva is a Spanish red wine from the Rioja region! This Rioja is made in the traditional way with long aging in American oak barrels. The wine is made from 100% Tempranillo and has a creamy, velvety taste. Lots of fruit, but also aromas of chocolate, coffee, and even mushrooms. This Rioja is produced by the winery Baron de Ley.
In the heart of warm Spanish Rioja stands a beautiful 16th-century Benedictine monastery housing the Baron de Ley winery. In 1985, three successful wine producers in Rioja decided to establish a new winery. They purchased a former Benedictine monastery with surrounding land and an accompanying wine cellar. Benedictine monks had been making their wine in this cellar since shortly after the Middle Ages. It was to become a Single Estate bodega, using grapes from its own vineyards—a unique concept in Rioja, where more than 90% of winemakers were dependent on local grape growers.
The winery has built up an enormous international reputation over the course of a few decades. One of the many showpieces of the fantastic Baron de Ley winery is this red Rioja Reserva. Today, it belongs Barón de Ley with more than 750 hectares of its own vineyards, it is one of the most successful wine companies in the world. Furthermore, at Barón de Ley, much more emphasis was placed on structure, color, and fruit aromas in the wines, because Rioja had to be more than an uncomplicated wine in which the taste of oak is predominantly dominant. Initially, these Riojas found their way mainly to Spanish restaurants and wine specialty shops, but once international attention had been attracted, the demand for Barón de Ley wines exceeded the supply. The name Barón de Ley has become synonymous with and a guarantee of top quality.
The Mendavia vineyard is influenced by the Mediterranean climate, which provides ideal conditions for the ripening of the grapes. The result is a wine in a modern style: concentrated, fruity, and with a silky smooth texture. The climate in Rioja is temperate, with influences from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The wine is primarily made with hand-picked grapes. Tempranillo-grapes grown in the Mendavia vineyards. This Reserva has undergone aging for 20 months in new American oak barrels, followed by a further 24 months of bottle aging.
In the glass, you see an attractive, ruby red color. Take the next step and put your nose to the glass, and you will smell seductive aromas of small forest fruits, plums, fresh mushrooms, cedar, coffee, and chocolate. Take a sip of this noble wine and taste that soft, satiny sensation against your palate. The flavor gradually builds into a full, powerful, and fruity wine with pleasant ripe tannins. The finish is long with attractive wild herbs. Baron de Ley Reserva therefore pairs fantastically with meat and spicy hard cheeses.
Moreover, Baron de Ley Reserva has frequently received awards over the years. For instance, in 2015, a tasting panel from the leading British wine magazine Decanter evaluated 95 Rioja wines. A considerable number received positive reviews, but only two wines fell into the highest category, “outstanding.” And the Barón de Ley Reserva 2010 is one of them!
