Robert Parker: 96/100 – Winespectator: 96/100 – Suckling: 97/100
The Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve 2020 is one of the best red wines from Italy, which is also offered at reasonably normal prices. Only 60,000 bottles of this top wine from the Fontodi winery are produced per vintage. Fortunately, we were able to secure several cases. This Super Tuscan can easily age for decades. A wine made for a grand moment.
The Fontodi ‘Flaccianello della Pieve’ is made from 100% Sangiovese. The grapes come from the oldest plots of the winery. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with its own wild yeasts, after which it aged for 24 months in French oak barriques. A fresh and penetrating wine. The aromas of various dark fruits intensify as the wine is allowed to breathe longer. Great length, warm and pure with a beautiful balance. Very long potential.
The Flaccianello has a ruby red color with intense fruity aromas of plums and cherries, violets and vanilla. Full and juicy flavor thanks to the soft tannins. The finish is complex with impressions of cocoa, tobacco, and fruit. Yet, a description really isn't enough. You have to experience this wine!
Moreover, Fontodi is situated in the heart of Chianti Classico, precisely in the valley south of the town of Panzano, and is known as the “Conca d’Oro” (the Golden Shell) due to its amphitheater shape. A true and characteristic “Terroir,” famous for centuries for its tradition of quality winemaking, thanks in part to a unique combination of high altitude, calcareous clayey soil, abundant light, and a fantastic microclimate – warm and dry with a distinct difference between day and night temperatures.
The company has been owned by the Manetti family since 1968. Moreover, the family has for centuries engaged in another activity typical of the Chianti region: the production of the famous “terrecotta” tiles. Due to the connection with the territory and a great passion for quality, the estate has successfully evolved towards increasingly attentive cultivation of the vineyards and a more in-depth knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the Panzano zone.
ROBERT PARKER: 96/100
The 2020 Flaccianello della Pieve is the full package. This point is clear when you taste all the other wines in the Fontodi portfolio and conclude with this bottle. This organic Sangiovese shows beautiful intensity and remains balanced throughout with dark fruit, crushed stone, spice and wild rose. It borrows themes of elegance, depth and ripeness played across this vintage. The wine wraps smoothly over the palate with substantial fruit weight and sweet tannins. This warm-vintage expression can be aged or enjoyed straight out of the gate. Production is 60,000 bottles.
WINESPECTATOR: 96/100
This pure red is sophisticated, complex and balanced, permeated with black cherry, blackberry, violet, mineral and spice aromas and flavors, with tannins that are present yet refined and well-integrated. The fruit persists from beginning to end, defining the finish. Sangiovese.
JAMES SUCKLING: 97/100
Extremely floral with sage and licorice to the berry and dark cherry aromas that follow through to a medium body, with fine and silky tannins that run the length of the wine. Very crunchy for Flaccianello. Vivid on the palate. From organically grown grapes.
