    Foradori Sgarzon Teroldego: wine made in amphora

    The Sgarzon Teroldego from the Foradori winery is a special red wine from the Dolomites in Northern Italy. It is a biodynamic red wine of outstanding quality! Uniquely, the wine has matured in amphora, an age-old method of winemaking that is slowly making a comeback. You taste ripe red plums, redcurrant, flint, and much more… A rich wine produced in limited quantities by the talented winemaker Elizabetta Foradori.

    Natural wine 2.0?

    Sgarzon Teroldego is produced in large terracotta jars (amphora/tinaja) from 100% Teroldego grapes. This wine reflects the essence of its terroir. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 270 meters in Campo Rotaliano, an area with unique sandy, well-drained soils. “Sgarzon” means “shoot” in the local dialect, referring to the deep roots of the old vines. These deep-rooted vines give the wine a complex and characterful structure. All red wines from Foradori are made from the local Teroldego grape. The Sgarzon vineyard is situated slightly more in the shade, resulting in a fresher and more elegant wine with slightly higher acidity. One could officially call this wine a natural wine. However, given how pure and beautiful it is made, we find that designation too generalizing. So, a natural wine 2.0…

    A Deep and Complex Flavor Profile

    Sgarzon Teroldego has an impressive flavor profile that is sure to please wine lovers. In the nose one finds aromas of ripe berries, violets and herbs. The taste is rich and full, with notes of black cherries, plums and a hint of earthy minerals. The tannins are firm but well integrated, providing a silky texture and a long, lingering finish. The excellent acidity contributes to the freshness and drinkability of the wine. Due to the aging on tinaja (420 liters of amphora), the wine becomes very soft and undergoes micro-oxidation, which contributes to the refinement of the wine. This combination of fruitiness, spiciness and minerality makes the Sgarzon Teroldego a versatile wine that goes well with various dishes.

    Sustainability and Craftsmanship at Foradori

    Elisabetta Foradori leads the Foradori winery with passion and dedication. She is known for her sustainable and biodynamic viticulture practices, which benefit the quality of the wine. Since the 1980s, she has been working on the restoration and improvement of the Teroldego variety. She has replanted old clones and cultivated the vineyards with respect for the environment. Today, her children Emilio, Theo, and Myrtha are increasingly taking over the management. The fermentation of Sgarzon Teroldego takes place in clay amphorae, a traditional method that emphasizes the pure expression of the grape. After fermentation, the wine ages in these amphorae for eight months, which contributes to its complexity and balance.
