Quinta de Cabriz Branco possesses a fresh Portuguese style and is therefore characteristic of modern Portugal: gently spicy, fresh aromatic, and surprisingly lively. A wine style, therefore, that is rapidly gaining ground in the Dão. Today, Quinta de Cabriz, with 34 hectares of gently rolling hills, is the prime example in the region. Delicious as an aperitif, excellent with light starters or soft cheeses. Also very suitable with various fish dishes such as grilled sea bream.

    Quinta de Cabriz

In 1989, a small group of ambitious winemakers started a new project in the Dão region. Determined to fully utilize the enormous potential of the region, the vineyard Quinta de Cabriz purchased, a vineyard with a long history. During that period, sales of Dão wines had declined sharply. This was mainly because the perception had arisen that Dão wines were primarily made by uninspired cooperatives producing wines that were far too robust and required heavy eating to digest the tannins. And unfortunately, that was indeed often the case.

Oenologists Carlos Lucas and Carlos Moura, convinced of the region's qualitative potential, wanted to show that things can be done differently in the Dão. Granite and clay in the vineyard soil would provide the desired terroir in the wines. With a limited yield per hectare of only 40 hectoliters instead of the permitted 55 hl, stunning results were achieved. Through hard work in the vineyard and with modern vinification techniques, they succeeded in producing elegant red and white wines that appeal to everyone. New plantings and an expansion of the number of vines were made possible by the continued success.

Today, with 34 hectares of gently rolling hills, Quinta de Cabriz is the prime example in the region. As the largest quinta in the Dão, it accounts for half of the region's total wine exports. In addition, the winery is attracting an increasing number of tourists to the quiet region east of Coimbra.

    Terroir and winemaking

Dão has a climate with warm summers and cold winters. The soils consist of granite, with a top layer of gravel and clay. After the bunches are destemmed, they are immediately lightly pressed, and climate-controlled fermentation can begin in the ten-thousand-liter stainless steel tanks. After stabilization, the wine is ready to be bottled.

Cabriz Branco taste and food pairing

The Quinta de Cabriz Branco wine is gently spicy, fresh and aromatic, and surprisingly lively. Aromas of citrus and apple are clearly discernible alongside the scent of fennel and blossom. To be served as an aperitif, with light starters, or with soft cheeses. Also very suitable with various fish dishes such as grilled sea bream.

    Did you know?

The tall pines surrounding the estate protect the vines from the cold spring winds. The low pH value of the soil ensures a natural freshness in all Dão wines.
