Tramin Pinot Grigio Unterebner was launched in 1989 as a symbol of Cantina Tramin’s pursuit of excellence. This has been very successful, as the Unterebner has already won the final of the Proefschrift Wine Competition in its category twice. The Pinot Grigio grapes grow at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters, on a calcareous soil with gravel and loam, partly on a bedrock of volcanic porphyry. This reveals the surprising finesse and elegance of this grape variety, with a decisive Alpine twist, beyond all fashion and trends. The Tramin Pinot Grigio Unterebner has a golden yellow color. On the nose, refined and fresh aromas with elegant notes of pear and hay, toasted bread with melted butter, tobacco, vanilla, and incense. The taste is full and rich, round and concentrated with an Alpine freshness. It is a juicy wine with mineral notes and a long, full finish.
Very tasty in combination with light to medium starters, fish dishes, and lightly seasoned white meat. It is a perfect companion for smoked fish, meat, and grilled vegetables.
Grape varieties and vinification
Immediately after the harvest, the grapes are pressed gently. Slow fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 18-20°C. This occurs partly in wooden barrels and partly in tonneaux. Malolactic fermentation also takes place here. The wine ages in the wooden barrels and a small portion in tonneaux, where it is allowed to settle and continue aging on its lees. After bottling, the wine ages in the bottle for at least 4 months. The total aging process lasts at least 15 months.
Cantina Tramin is a cooperative in Alto Adige owned by 290 winegrowers. Together, these farmers own 245 hectares of vineyards, from which a total of one and a half million bottles are produced. That seems like a substantial number, but for a cooperative, it is very limited. Tramin is capable of producing a quality comparable to that of small producers. Consequently, the company is ranked among the top 30 estates in Italy. Over the past 10 years, no fewer than 20 Tre Bicchieri (Italian highest award) wines have been produced here! This success is thanks to winemaker Willi Stürz, who was named ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in Italy in 2004.
Tramin's wines are exceptionally pure due to the natural cultivation of the vineyards and the precision work in the cellar. In 2001, the winery was completely renovated, and since then, work in the cellar has been carried out exclusively using gravity. The goal is to produce wines that are the maximum reflection of their grape variety.
