Bodega De Moya produces a wine with Maria Bobal from the grape named Bobal. The grape is hardly known to many people, yet in Spain it is the second most planted red grape (after, of course, the Tempranillo). There is something else special about this Bobal, namely that the grapes can produce very impressive wines of superior quality if the vineyard is planted at a higher altitude, more than 700 meters above sea level. And that is something they have understood well at De Moya. The De Moya vineyards are hidden in the mountains behind Valencia in a very charming village named Casas De Moya. The altitude varies from 800 m to 950 m, which guarantees a large difference in day and night temperatures. The old vines are grown in poor sandy soil with many pebbles. Yields are very low, but of very high quality. And you can taste that!

    Bodega De Moya

De Moya is a family business founded by Yves and Sophie Laurijssens. The family is originally from Belgium and is known there for its expertise in successful "turnarounds": making loss-making companies profitable again. Out-of-the-box thinking is indispensable in this process. And that, combined with their Burgundian attitude, is precisely what ultimately led the family to start a wine business in the landscape around Valencia and to produce wines there from local grapes: Bobal and Monastrell for red, and Merseguera for white. With De Moya, Yves and Sophie aim to create wines that combine the traditions of the region with efficiency and modern winemaking techniques. The terroir of the old vineyards yields complex and exciting wines that are food-friendly and, moreover, very affordable.

    Terroir and winemaking

Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 850 meters and the soil is calcareous with sandy loam. The vines are between 27 and 43 years old. Yields are very low. The blend for Maria Bopal consists of Bobal (90%), Merlot (10%). After harvesting, the grapes are cooled and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. The 12-month aging takes place in French oak barrels, 35% of which are new and 65% used.

    Taste and food pairing

Our tasting team Wijnclubamsterdam.nl was very impressed by De Moya Maria Bobal. We tasted an aromatic wine with spices, vanilla, and ripe fruit such as blackberries, dried figs, and cranberry jam. The taste is full yet fresh with beautifully integrated tannins. The aromatic and ripe notes in this wine are ideal with all kinds of red meat dishes, spiced stews, and game.
