Luigi Einaudi Nebbiolo from the Langhe is made from young Nebbiolo vines in the vineyards in Neive. Eventually, Barolo will be made from these vines, but the vines are currently still too young for that. However, the quality of this wine is already fantastic. We at Wijnclub Amsterdam therefore call this a young Barolo!
In 1897, the 23-year-old Luigi Einaudi graduated as an economist from the University of Turin. With the proceeds from his first book, he bought a farm in the Langhe region of Piedmont. A successful journalistic, scientific, and political career followed—Luigi Einaudi became the first president of Italy after World War II—but he remained closely involved in the expansion and development of his wine business. To this day, the guiding principle when selecting new vineyards is that ‘a great wine can only come from a great vineyard and great terroir’. The San Luigi cru in Dogliani and the most recent Cannubi cru in Barolo are good examples of this.
Since 1990, the wine company has been in the hands of Luigi’s talented great-grandson Matteo Sardegna.
Piedmont has a continental climate with long, cold winters and warm, often humid summers. In autumn, mist often hangs in the valleys. The vineyards for this wine are located in the Cattedri cru in the municipality of Neive at an altitude of 310 meters and face east. The soil is rich in limestone and marl. The grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks. Aging lasts 12 months and takes place in both barriques and traditional large oak barrels. The wine subsequently ages in the bottle for 2 months.
Luigi Einaudi Nebbiolo is an elegant garnet-red wine with delicate aromas of red fruit and spices, a full, powerful taste, fairly smooth tannins, and a long finish. Serve this wine with fine meat dishes, such as veal, beef tenderloin, and light game. It is also delicious with richer dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles.
