Torre Alta Primitivo is a wine from warm Puglia, where the Primitivo grapes develop their sun-baked flavor. The grapes feel perfectly at home in the Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine and constant annual rainfall that contributes just enough to optimal ripening. According to Vivino, Torre Alta Primitivo ranks among the top 5% of all wines in this wine region.
Puglia, in the far southeast of Italy, is a warm and fertile region. A vibrant wine culture has existed there for more than two thousand years. However, those grapes must be able to withstand the heat, which is why Puglia excels particularly in red wines. In recent decades, great strides in quality have been made. Whereas in the past, just like in Sicily, enormous harvests were brought in that yielded a lot of mediocre wine, increasingly better wines are now being made from indigenous grapes such as primitivo, negroamaro and malvasia nera. The power and spiciness of these wines are sometimes reminiscent of the style of heavy Rhône wines.
The climate is warm but is influenced by the Adriatic Sea. The vineyards are located primarily around the city of Brindisi. The grapes undergo a traditional, slow vinification at a temperature of approximately 25 degrees Celsius. Bottling follows after four months of rest in barrels.
Torre Alta Primitivo has a deep red color and a warm, peppery aroma of ripe red fruit. The taste is surprisingly full of candied fruit, plum, berries, forest fruits, and a hint of pepper on the finish. You taste a fresh undertone and a silky smooth finish. Pairs excellently with hard cheeses, grilled meats, and charcuterie.
The Primitivo is DNA-identical to Californian Zinfandel, the pride of California. The origin of this grape lies in Croatia.
