Petrolo Galatrona – an iconic Grand Cru Merlot from Tuscany

When you say Tuscany, you think of Sangiovese. But the Galatrona of Petrolo has been proving since 1994 that too Merlot can shine grandly here. This wine is often called the “Grand Cru of Merlot” – and rightly so. With 100 points from James Suckling, he belongs to the absolute top of Tuscany, Italy.

The Galatrona comes from the DOC Val d’Arno di Sopra and is made from 100% Merlot, sourced from low-vigor Bordeaux clones planted in the 1980s and 1990s. Only about 30,000 bottles are produced annually. The result is a wine of exceptional depth, elegance, and refinement, certified organic and fully true to its terroir.

    Flavor Profile and Culinary Combinations

On the nose, the Galatrona opens with intense aromas of dark fruit, plums, blueberry, and a hint of cocoa, interwoven with earthy and spicy notes. Wood accents from French barriques add extra finesse.

On the palate, the wine presents itself as full and layered: ripe fruit, silky tannins, fresh acidity, and perfect balance. The manual bâtonnage over six months adds extra texture and roundness. The finish is long, complex, and elegant—a wine that keeps singing endlessly.

    Perfect combinations with:

    • Grilled red meat and bistecca alla Fiorentina
    • Deer, wild boar and other noble game
    • Aged Tuscan cheeses and charcuterie
    • Ossobuco and rich casseroles
    • Risottos or pastas with truffle

Serve at 18–20°C to experience its full expression.

    The Petrolo Wine Estate

The Petrolo estate is situated on the southeastern borders of the Chianti hills, at an altitude of 300 meters in Val d’Arno di Sopra. The Galatrona vineyard comprises 10 hectares with nearly 50,000 Merlot vines, planted on spurred cordon.

Since 2004, the winery has fully switched to sustainable and natural farming methods, holding official organic certification in 2016. They work without artificial fertilizers or pesticides, using dry cultivation and grass cover to preserve biodiversity.

The harvest is carried out entirely by hand in small crates, followed by rigorous selection. Vinification takes place in cement vats with indigenous yeasts. Gentle, manual extraction ensures a refined structure. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and 18–20 months of aging in French barriques, one-third of which are new.

    Terroir and Expression

The soil of Galatrona is rich in clay, loam, slate, and sandstone. This composition gives the Merlot grapes intensity, elegance, and resilience – even in challenging years. The southeast exposure guarantees optimal sunshine and warmth, essential for balanced ripening.

As winemaker Luca Sanjust summarizes it: “A great wine must speak the language of the land from which it originates.” The Galatrona is exactly that – an authentic translation of the Tuscan terroir.
