The Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore is a Chianti Just the way you want it! The wine is made from three grape varieties: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino. This red wine has aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The full yet soft taste is very fruity (blackcurrant, blackberries), with a hint of vanilla and a fine acidity towards the finish. This Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore is a wine with plenty of flavor and good structure. The aroma is slightly woody, spicy, and features plenty of red fruit, such as redcurrants. The soft tannins are well-balanced. Chianti is made from the Sangiovese grape, a grape with a lot of flavor. Therefore, the wine pairs perfectly with pasta Bolognese. The acidity of the tomato sauce and that of the wine form a perfect combination.
The story of Poggiotondo begins in 1968 with Carlo Antonini. A teacher, passionate about agriculture and a beekeeper in his spare time. He bought the properties that historically belonged to the Conti Guidi, an old noble family that owned land in Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. This family gave the village its name, Cerreto Guidi in the Middle Ages.
Cerreto Guidi, located on the “via francigena” was the destination for pilgrims and Cosimo from Fiorentina. Today Cerreto Guidi, belonging to the province of Florence, is an authentic place in the heart of Tuscany, close to Pisa, Lucca and Siena 40 km from the sea of Tirrenia.
Carlo's great passion for viticulture was passed on to his son Alberto, who, together with his wife Alessandra, aims to enhance the territory with respect for the Tuscan winemaking tradition. Alberto and Alessandra live in the main building on the Poggitondo estate, together with their three children, Angelica, Margherita, and Carlo.
The Mediterranean climate and limestone soil, organic farming, and the focus on indigenous grapes such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and a small proportion of Trebbiano, make up the original “Chianti recipe”. The soil is rich in lime with white seashells, which brings elegance and complexity to the wines.
