    A polished wine since 1962

The Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino displays balance as well as that difficult combination of power and elegance. This magnificent new release shows dark fruit and tart cherry. It then slowly opens up to reveal light spices, toasted nut, and crushed limestone. The wine gives a true sense of place, with its roots in the northern half of the appellation; here the light is brighter and the nights cooler. That brilliant clarity is expressed in the pure quality of the fruit and the sharp focus of the mouthfeel, driven by balanced tannins and acidity. The sensation it conveys is compact and long, without too much extra volume or body. This wine is like a chiseled and carefully polished marble statue in a Renaissance church.

Brunello is a great wine that deserves something substantial. A fine roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, a pheasant stew, or that famous dish of all: bistecca alla fiorentina, Tuscan-style steak, ideally made from native Chianina beef.

Cheese should be kept simple, especially with older vintages. Aged Pecorino or Parmesan would be ideal.

The vintage Brunello di Montalcino “Canalicchio di Sopra” is the result of a blend of two different soils. Terrain with a distinct clay component, very rich in intermediate elements such as magnesium, iron, and manganese, characteristic of the Cru Canalicchio. In addition, a “galestro” soil with a very high mineral content, a loamy texture, and a high presence of silt. This is characteristic of the Cru Montosoli.

    Canalicchio di Sopra

For 50 years, their mission has been the pursuit of elegance and refinement. Elegance is the essence of their production philosophy, from their vineyards to the microclimate that has softened the grapes. Their production methods align perfectly with this. At Canalicchio di Sopra, they have been making wine this way since 1962!

In their bottles, they try to bring out the special characteristics derived from their Crus, from the microclimate that surrounds them, and from the people who work there to distinguish us from the rest. They have chosen to work with only one grape variety, the only one they have come to know over the years, Sangiovese: they have learned to accept the unique way it expresses itself in the different Crus, so similar and yet so different from one another. Their identity is built on these differences.

Their vineyards extend over 19 hectares of land within the Canalicchio and Montosoli Cru: diverse terrains, varying exposures, and different microclimates that make each vineyard unique. Elegant and powerful, minerality and juiciness, acidity and purity of the grapes: these are the fruits of their labor.
