This Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is is not only suitable for a larger group, but the size allows the wine to develop more complexly than the standard size. It displays balance and symmetry with that difficult dual delivery of power and elegance. This magnificent wine shows dark fruit and tart cherry. It then slowly relaxes to reveal light spices, roasted nuts, flowers, and wet limestone on the nose. The taste manifests itself in the pure quality of dark black fruit, balsamic notes, and cedar. There is a sharp focus on the mouthfeel, with balanced tannins and a beautifully fresh acidity. The sensation it conveys is compact and long, without too much extra volume or body. Everything sits very neatly in its place. This Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is the beautiful result of a blend of two different soils. Consequently, the blend gives the wine great minerality and juiciness.
Supported by excellent acidity as well as the large size. Both characteristics therefore make it ideal for long aging. The wine has a drinking window of 2020-2045, provided it is stored in a good cellar or climate-controlled cabinet. This Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino is the ultimate wine for a fine dinner with true connoisseurs at the table. Fantastic with game dishes such as venison and wild boar. Also fantastic for lingering after dinner with some aged hard cheeses such as aged Parmesan or Pecorino.
In 1962, Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti. The winery is located in the northern part of the municipality of Montalcino. Canalicchio owns 60 hectares of land, of which 15 hectares are planted with vineyards and 2 hectares with olives. Wine has been produced with great passion and skill for three generations. The latest technologies are used while respecting old traditions and nature. The vines are planted in two different zones in Montalcino. The differences in location and soil consequently result in different types of Sangiovese, also known here as Brunello, which carefully blend together in the cellars to create a beautiful result. The vines are planted on a soil of clay and marl with scattered layers of limestone. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 283 to 290 meters above sea level. The wine rests for another 36 months in 25 hl Slavonian oak barrels, after which it ages in the bottle for another year.
Brunello is a spontaneous mutant of the sangiovese and the grape is grown exclusively in Montalcino. Sangiovese is a very old grape variety. The grape presumably originates from Tuscany.
