Le Serre Nuove is officially the second wine of Tenuta dell Ornellaia. That sounds rather disparaging, however…. This is an exceptionally fine wine which is much more affordable than the cult wine “Ornellaia” itself. This second wine is also an absolute top wine!!
In the glass, Le Serre Nuove is rich, concentrated in color, and deep ruby red. The aroma of this wine is roasted fruit, spices, tobacco, leather, and hints of eucalyptus and menthol. The taste is very intense, with the creaminess of the Merlot grapes, enriched by the dark black fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Finally, the cedar of the Cabernet Franc is clearly present again. On tasting, the wine has a good tannin structure, ripe without being drying. Finally, a crisp and savory finish. The vineyards of Le Serre Nuove are located near the famous wine region of Bolgheri, in the Maremma close to the Tuscan coast. The fruit comes from the younger vines in the vineyard of Ornellaia are the basis for this wine. The wine is made from a blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 17% Petit Verdot.
This part of the Maremma not only boasts stunning wild nature but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Ludovico’s uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn the wine world’s attention to Bolgheri with his pioneering work at Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori had a head start from birth. The Antinoris have belonged to the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and became members of the wine merchants' guild as early as 1385. Since then, at least one member of the family has always been involved in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were significantly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the family gained extensive experience in winemaking. At the beginning of this century, they founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked in the family business for a while but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He established a vast vineyard at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean coast, 96 km from Florence.
