Saint Clair Marlborough Pinot Noir: It tastes just like fruit from the Betuwe!

The fruit came from a number of specially selected low-lying vineyards in the region of the southern valleys of the Wairau Plain in Marlborough, New Zealand. In the run-up to the harvest, each vineyard was closely monitored and tasted to determine when the flavors were optimal, and harvested in the cool of the morning. After a five-day cold maceration of the skins, fermentation takes place to obtain color and flavor. During fermentation, every effort is also made to increase concentration. The ‘cap’ (the skins that float to the top) is re-submerged eight times a day. After fermentation, a portion of the wine ages for several months in new and used oak.

Saint Clair

Saint Clair is named after James Sinclair, who was responsible for the first settlements in Blenheim, New Zealand, the home of the winery on the South Island. Founded in 1978, the family business is among the pioneers of viticulture in Marlborough. Hence, the link to pioneer James Sinclair was quickly established.

Saint Clair owns more than 270 hectares of vineyards in Marlborough on the South Island and in Hawke's Bay on the North Island. Saint Clair Estate is considered one of the pioneers in the Marlborough wine region. Judy and Neal Ibbotson planted the first vineyards in 1978 and initially supplied grapes to a few wineries in the region. With the help of winemaker Matt Thomson, who had experience at numerous wineries in Bordeaux and Italy, they realized this idea in the early 1990s. Saint Clair wines were soon awarded prizes at national and international tastings, including by the most famous American wine magazine, “Wine Spectator”. One of the greatest successes is undoubtedly the award for “Best New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year”, which Saint Clair Estate received in 2005 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. The Saint Clair Marlborough Pinot Noir continues to receive medals and other awards all over the world every year.
