Beauté du Sud Cabernet Syrah is a blend consisting of two grape varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine comes from high-altitude plots around Limoux and along the Pyrenees. The lower temperatures and poor soil here in the far south of the Languedoc result in smaller but deeply concentrated harvests. The Syrah for the Beauté du Sud comes from warmer plots and gives the final blend its sultry fruity body and creamy taste. That, combined with the spiciness of the Cabernet and the toasted notes and vanilla from oak aging, makes the wine a wonderful aperitif or accompaniment to meat dishes and salty cheeses.
The literal translation of ‘Beauté du Sud’ is ‘beauty of the south’. And winemaker Alain Grignon certainly lives up to that with this Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah wine. Alain Grignon owns a winery in Carcassonne that processes all the healthy grapes from the surrounding area into delicious wines. Since 1998, he has been making wines here just the way consumers prefer to drink them: smooth, fruity, not overly complex, and above all, affordable. Beauté du Sud is a good example of that.
A Mediterranean climate with warm summers and fairly mild winters. The terroir consists of calcareous sandy and red clay soil full of stones. The Cabernet for this wine comes from high-altitude plots around Limoux and along the Pyrenees. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, after which blending takes place.
The sultry, ripe Syrah combined with the “cooler” Cabernet from higher-altitude plots results in a wine that is creamy, sultry, and spicy, yet possesses beautiful tannins, fine acidity, and a pleasant blackcurrant note. Serve this wine with meat dishes, cheeses, and charcuterie. Thanks to its round, soft tannins and ripe style, it is also delicious as an ‘evening wine’.
