Antinori's flagship

The Tenuta Tignanello estate is situated in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hills between the river valleys of Greve and Pesa. It extends over an area of ​​319 hectares, of which approximately 130 are dedicated to vines. Two of the estate's prized vineyards, Tignanello and Solaia, lie on the same hill, on soils derived from Pliocene marine marlstone, rich in limestone and slate. The vines enjoy hot temperatures during the day and cooler evenings during the growing season.

The estate's two signature wines, Solaia and Tignanello, are produced from these vineyards. They are described by the international press as “one of the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture”.

The grapes for the Tenuta Tignanello Solaia come from the Solaia vineyard. This vineyard of approximately 10 hectares faces southwest near the Tignanello estate. Sole means 'sun' in Italian. The name of the wine is the name of this sunny vineyard. The terroir, the soil, is also very important for the quality of the wine. This contains rocky calcareous soil. Solaia matures for 18 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels.

Within the boundaries of Tenuta Tignanello’s approximately 130 hectares of vineyards, divided into smaller individual plots, lie two of the finest gems: the Tignanello vineyard and the Solaia vineyard. The soils, originating from the Pliocene, are rich in calcareous rock and marl and are situated at an altitude of 350–400 meters above sea level (1,148–1,312 feet) with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night; all these factors combined give the grapes their unique characteristics.

The grape varieties cultivated include the indigenous Sangiovese, as well as the non-traditional varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. There are also small plots of Malvasia and Trebbiano for Vinsanto production and 37 hectares of olive groves.

During the 1970s, Tenuta Tignanello served as a kind of laboratory for Marchesi Antinori. It was a center for new viticultural research and development when they introduced new winemaking techniques and new varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Several innovations regarding vine density or pruning techniques, as well as the selection of the Sangiovese grape, were always aimed at obtaining grapes with concentrated fruit and soft tannins. In this unique terroir, Sangiovese and Cabernet can therefore fully express their own distinctive personalities while simultaneously reflecting the characteristic features of the territory.
