The Gaja Ca Marcanda Promis is a unique wine with a seductive, Italian spicy aroma of red cherries and flowers. This wine is ready to drink until 2025. With a decanter and large glasses, this red wine is already fantastic, but the Super Tuscan will reach its peak in the coming years. On the palate, it is full and soft, yet playful and lively. The oak aging and Merlot ensure drinking pleasure and a pleasantly soft mouthfeel.
The Gaja Ca Marcanda Promis comes from the Maremma region in Toscane. The vineyards of these vines are located in the somewhat more clayey part of the Bolgheri area. Until the 1930s, this area was a swampy region where even the malaria mosquito was still found. It was drained by Mussolini as a prestige project, thereby making it accessible for all kinds of agriculture. In the 1970s, it was discovered that the somewhat higher, hilly terrain was highly suitable for the cultivation of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Subsequently, more and more wineries established themselves in this region, such as Gaja Cà Marcanda Promis. The great international success came with the current and well-known iconic wines Sassicaia and Masseto.
In addition to the previously mentioned international grapes, work was also done with the indigenous Sangiovese, and the wines have a Bordeaux-like character with an Italian swing. Angelo Gaja therefore now belongs to the select club of Super Tuscan producers. And with success, as evidenced by his Promis, and also the Magari and Cà Marcanda, among others.
The Maremma region is relatively cool due to its sea breeze and altitude, and the rich soil ensures beautiful ripening of the Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese grapes. After aging for 12 months in old barriques (beautifully subdued vanilla on the nose and an emphasis on the fruit), the wines are blended and mature for a few more months in the bottle before being released onto the market.
The result is a very creamy wine with plenty of black forest fruit such as blackberries and blueberries. You can also detect some tar and even a hint of cherry coke. When the wine has aged slightly, the balsamic and tobacco notes also emerge.
In short, a fantastic, intense wine of great class. It can be enjoyed perfectly well young, but can also certainly be aged in the cellar for another 5 years starting now. Definitely for special moments! The wine received 92+ points from The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker Jr.).
Absolutely delicious with roasts like roast beef or a bistecca marinated in balsamic vinegar.
