South Africa’s national grape variety Pinotage is a cross between pinot noir and cinsault. At Simonsig, they prefer to age the wine wood-free, so their Pinotage is primarily characterized by an abundance of red fruit. Consequently, the aroma and taste feature plenty of raspberries and berries, along with luscious ripe notes and velvety tannins. Truly delicious!

Terroir and winemaking

The Simonsig wine region from Stellenbosch has a maritime climate with relatively dry, warm summers and mild winters. The red-colored soil is rich in iron, clay, and minerals. After the grapes are carefully picked, fermentation takes place without any contact with wood.

Innovative Simonsig

For many, South Africa is a country of the New World. However, when you consider that brothers François and Johan Malan represent the tenth generation of winemakers in the family, you would hardly dare call South Africa a New World wine country anymore.

Simonsig is progressive in many respects. In the late 1980s, then-winegrower Frans Malan was one of the first winemakers to bottle his own wine and introduce new grape varieties and cellar techniques. Simonsig was also the first winery to market a sparkling wine, the South African answer to Champagne. Frans Malan rightly emerged as one of the defining pioneers in Stellenbosch prior to the major breakthrough in the 1990s. Simonsig benefits from the variety of terroirs and microclimates of Stellenbosch and cultivates a range of grape varieties on more than 200 hectares. From these, Simonsig produces wonderfully beautiful single-varietal wines such as this Pinotage.
