What immediately stands out about Travaglini wines is the distinctive shape of the bottle. The bottle has a sort of ‘bulge’ on one side, making the wine appear visually somewhat fuller. This is further enhanced by the fact that the label follows the bulge at an angle. We wondered what the reason for this was. Could Travaglini be following another very well-known wine producer with its angled bottle neck? That cannot be true. In this price segment, Travaglini Gattinara tasters can no longer be tempted by cheap marketing in the form of an unconventional bottle. No, Travaglini designed this bottle shape so that the sediment from aged wine remains in the bulge, making decanting unnecessary. What an eye for detail—we love that! The wine has a garnet red color of medium intensity. On the nose, it is very refined with red cherries, roses, and hints of tar and licorice in the background. On the palate, it is elegant with medium concentration, plenty of freshness, and a fine grip from silky tannins. The wine finishes with a long aftertaste.
Travaglini Gattinara DOCG pairs well with Northern Italian dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, roasted wood pigeon, veal cutlets, or onion tart. Or drink this wine with a soft cheese like Taleggio. These are wines to take your time with, so enjoy!
A well-designed bottle indicates that the producer Travaglini focuses on relevant details and dares to deviate from convention. Travaglini is a producer that has been making wine from Gattinara since 1920. Gattinara is a small DOCG area in ‘Alto Piemonte’, in the north of Piedmont, south of Switzerland. Because Alto Piemonte borders the Alps, the wines are sometimes referred to as ‘mountain Nebbiolos’. Viticulture here takes place on the foothills of the Alps, primarily between 300 and 400 meters in altitude, so actually no higher than in Barolo, for example. Travaglini’s wines have a somewhat finer structure than the average in Barolo, and they can age for a long time. They are very precise and refined wines with great subtlety, made with a keen eye for detail.
