Origin of the Sangiovese grape

Sangiovese is a typically Italian grape, and it is the most widely planted grape variety in the country. Especially in Tuscany, the grape is very popular in areas such as Chianti and Montalcino. It forms the basis for many top wines. The grape is known by many regional names in areas such as Montefalco Rosso, Morellino di Scansano, Rosso Conero and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. In the Montalcino area, a clone is grown: Sangiovese Grosso, also known as Brunello.

Which wines are made from the Sangiovese grape?

The versatile Sangiovese grape forms the basis of several famous Tuscan wines, each with its own character. In Chianti, central Tuscany, wines are produced that consist of at least 80% Sangiovese, often supplemented with local grape varieties. These medium-bodied wines are characterized by lively acidity and aromas of cherries and spices. The prestigious Chianti Classico is a well-known example.

Further south, in Montalcino, the powerful Brunello di Montalcino is produced, made from 100% Sangiovese. This complex wine is aged for at least five years before release and is known for its intense fruit, tobacco and leather aromas. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, from the town of the same name, sits between Chianti and Brunello in style, with at least 70% Sangiovese and 24 months of ageing.

The famous wine estate Antinori is also based in Tuscany, and many of its exclusive top wines are made from Sangiovese.

The production method strongly influences the final result. Traditional winemakers use long maceration (skin contact) and large Slavonian oak barrels for elegant, structured wines. Modern producers often opt for shorter maceration and French barriques, resulting in fruitier, more accessible styles. Terroir also plays an important role: altitude differences, soil type, climate, and location give each wine its unique character.

What is the flavor profile of the Sangiovese grape?

On the nose, Sangiovese presents elegant aromas of red cherries and ripe plums, accompanied by subtle notes of dried herbs such as thyme and oregano. With ageing, more complex aromas of leather, tobacco and sometimes even truffle often develop. One of the most striking characteristics of Sangiovese is its lively, high acidity, which gives the wine its refreshing character. The tannins are generally firm but elegantly structured, contributing to the wine’s excellent ageing potential. The flavour is characterised by a medium to full body, with prominent cherry fruit notes and subtle spiciness. The finish is long and balanced, with acidity and tannins in perfect harmony with the fruit. View more wines in the firm and spicy red flavour profile.

What are the characteristics of Sangiovese

The taste depends heavily on where it grows. The wine can be on the crisp side due to the acidity and tannins present, but at the same time soft due to juicy, ripe fruit. Characteristic of Sangiovese wine is the combination of sweet aromas of juicy, ripe cherry and the fresh acidity of redcurrant. You can also recognize roasted tomato, sweet balsamic vinegar, oregano, and espresso. Thanks to its high acidity, it pairs well with spicy dishes and holds its own in combination with tomato sauce.

The literal translation of Sangiovese is ‘the blood of Jupiter’, the most important Roman god. A young Sangiovese wine is brick red in color, but as it ages slightly, a warm orange rim appears. This wine ages well. The storage period varies from 5 to 25 years.

What is the serving temperature for Sangiovese?

The serving temperature varies by wine and is usually based on its individual characteristics. Since Sangiovese wines can be very versatile, one should aim to stay between 12 and 8 degrees. For fresher examples, such as some Chiantis, a lower temperature is desirable, as this emphasizes the wine's fresh and fruity notes. For fuller, robust examples with more tannins, a temperature between 16 and 18 degrees is suitable to accentuate the warm character. A temperature that is too low will make the wine appear astringent. But beware: a temperature that is too high can make a wine seem clumsy, unbalanced, and alcoholic!
