Alba in Piedmont is one of the very newest Italian DOCs. It was only introduced in August 2010. It covers a much broader range of wine styles than the more specific DOCs such as Barolo or Barbera d'Alba. Instead of being limited to a single grape variety, wines can be made from one or more of approximately 15 grapes.
The effect of this is therefore a clear increase in the planting of globally popular grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The varieties that have historically proven particularly well-suited to the Alba terroir have their own DOCs. This includes Barbera d'Alba, but also Dolcetto d'Alba and Nebbiolo d'Alba.
The DOC takes its name from the town in the center. This is one of the two most important wine towns in Piedmont (the other is the larger Asti, just to the east). It covers more than just the municipality itself. It extends across all four routes in the catchment area of all local DOCs. This gives winemakers more freedom to produce wines blended with grapes from different zones.
Alba is located in the northeastern corner of the province of Cuneo, home to some of Italy's best terroir and wines. The classic landscape of Piedmont here consists of rolling hills, a topography that ensures significant climate variation and gives grape growers the luxury of choice when selecting vineyard locations with a specific mesoclimate. The wooded valleys here also produce the other gastronomic delight for which Piedmont is known: truffles.
