Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block is a red wine from South Africa featuring the Syrah grape. The wine has a delicious, full flavor with many nuances. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruit (cherries, red currants) and blueberries, complemented by a hint of white pepper. On the palate, lush black fruit, subtle sweet spice aromas, great body, and notes of dark chocolate. At the same time, it remains velvety smooth with a super long finish. Powerful yet balanced. Very tasty. Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block is made from a blend of five grapes: alongside Syrah, there is also Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault, and Viognier (yes, a white grape!).
Fantastic in combination with roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, beef stew with sage, as well as grilled ribeye with herb butter.
The beautiful Boekenhoutskloof estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Franschhoek (Paarl) district. Founded in 1776 by French Huguenots, a consortium of six investors took over the estate in 1993. A new, innovative era dawned. Marc Kent has been cellar master since 1996 and soon became shareholder number seven. This former fighter pilot proved to be an unexpectedly good winemaker due to his boldness and fearlessness. Under his inspiring leadership, he guided Boekenhoutskloof to the top of South Africa. In 2012, he was awarded the title ‘Winery of the Year’ by the renowned wine guide Platter’s Wine Guide.
They practice biodynamics and are one of the 31 Leading Wineries that are members of the Old Vine Project, which aims to highlight the unique value of old vines.
Marc's philosophy is: 'Organic winemaking means leaving the world in a better way than how we found it.'
To preserve this unique biodiversity, invasive plants have been removed from the farm. In addition, large parts of the surrounding area have already been cleared of pine and gum trees. The restoration of the fragile river area and the reintroduction of various native plants is in full swing.
Boekenhoutskloof is therefore one of the founders of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy, an initiative to improve cooperation between neighbors and to improve fire management and the conservation of “fynbos” in the valley.
