An affordable Barolo Riserva with beautiful complexity!

Cascina Gherzina Barolo Riserva DOCG is the flagship wine of the Cascina Gherzina winery. This wine has aged in oak barrels for 36 months and then for at least another 12 months in the bottle. The result is a refined wine with beautiful complexity. Mind you: this is a serious wine! Barolos are high in acidity and, especially at a young age, have quite a bit of tannin. This is the ultimate food wine! With a fine dish, this will be the star of the evening!

Tasting note Cascina Ghercina Barolo Riserva DOCG

This Barolo Riserva has a bright light red color. An intense nose of blackberries, violets, oak aging, cigar box, licorice, and some balsamic. A pleasant drying mouthfeel due to the tannins, as is often the case with Nebbiolo. On the palate, berries, blackberries, wood, and tobacco. A wine that can certainly age for 10 to 12 years. A wine with good structure, an aromatic profile of spices, and hints of licorice. Full and velvety on the palate with well-integrated tannins.

This wine is perfect for a dish with lots of flavour! Winter stews, but also of course the pasta with white truffle…. a richly filled risotto with bacon and fennel sausage. They are the ideal partners on the table to enjoy intensely together with this Barolo.

    Cascina Ghercina Winery

And Cascina Ghercina is a truly top-tier house; all their wines offer excellent value for money. The estate is situated in the heart of the Langhe, by the tiny Lake Ghercina, which nevertheless provides sufficient cooling for the small vineyard. Cascina Ghercina was acquired by brothers Paolo and Guido Sartirano in 2002. They are part of the Sartirano family, which has been successfully producing wine since 1871 and owns various estates in Italy. With this acquisition, the house has taken a huge step forward with an impressive portfolio.

Barolo wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape. It is sometimes said that the name comes from Nebbia, which means mist in Italian. The grape also has a sort of dull white top layer. At the same time, the thick skin ensures that the grape does not burst when exposed to excessive moisture. And that is very important, since the grape is always harvested as one of the last in the season during the mist period! In any case, the Nebbiolo grape produces full-bodied wines with that typical aroma of perfumed flowers and the unorthodox combination of wood, leather, asphalt, and earth. A rollercoaster for your sense of smell and taste. If you pair it with food, make sure to choose dishes that can handle this wine, such as meat, pasta with heavy sauces, or a rich risotto. Otherwise, it is a waste of both the wine and the food. This Cascina Ghercina Barolo Riserva is on the wish list of many a wine lover and is simply a fantastic bottle of wine that never disappoints.
