Château Carignan

Château Carignan It is located in Carignan de Bordeaux, a region 10 kilometers east of the city of Bordeaux. The main grape variety for the house is Merlot, just as for the Right Bank wines of Saint Emilion and Pomerol. The clay-rich limestone hills in the area produce subtle, delicious, soft, round, and fruity wines that appeal to everyone's taste.

The Château de Carignan – a true fairytale castle with pointed towers and battlements, overgrown with breathtaking rose bushes – dates back to 1452. The estate was once a gift from Charles VII to Jean Poton de Xaintrailles, who had distinguished himself for the French kingdom alongside Joan of Arc.

The Château Carignan estate comprises a total of one hundred and fifty hectares of land, of which 65 hectares are planted with vines. One-third of the vineyards are older than forty years; the remaining vines are between eight and twenty-five. They are ideally situated facing south and southwest. The Château's cellar is equipped with the most modern winemaking equipment.

Terroir and vinification

Chateau Carignan is situated in a maritime climate with (currently) often warm summers and mild winters. The weather can be unpredictable. The terroir consists of limestone, gravel, and clay. Fermentation takes place after the grapes have been selected and destemmed. The duration of aging in barriques varies from nine to twelve months, depending on the vintage.

Taste and food pairing

The wine is deep ruby red in color and smells and tastes of delicious small ripe red fruit, spices, cedarwood, and vanilla. A mature and lived-in wine to which the old vines, 30 to 35 years old, have certainly contributed. An excellent pairing with pan-fried or grilled sirloin or tenderloin.
