Zalema Vendimia Tardia, a late-harvested, unfortified dessert wine. Produced by a small family business in Huelva, Andalusia, a very limited edition of a special wine from Southern Spain. You will notice white raisins, currants, candied ginger/crystal ginger, dates, marmalade, caramel, chocolate, dried plum, fig, and apricot. The Contreras Ruiz Kala is beautifully balanced and has a long and complex finish. Taste this gem and you will be sold!
The Kala is fresh and sweet, with a perfect balance between acidity and residual sugars, and has a long, deep aftertaste. When we tasted it, we immediately noticed that it has a bit of a Vin Santo nose!
Kala comes in a 300 ml bottle with a sprayed floral print specially designed for this wine, and when you buy 2 bottles, you receive them in gift packaging made especially for this wine. The wine was created as a tribute to 2 generations of women: the mothers and grandmothers.
The Contreras Ruiz Kala dessert wine is unfortified and naturally sweet! So, without added sugar or alcohol. How do you get such a lusciously sweet wine? The grapes for this dessert wine are harvested late, not until late autumn/early winter. This ensures that the grapes and aromas not only ripen optimally and produce sugars, but also lose some moisture. Ultimately, you end up with extremely dried-out raisins on the vine. All the aroma, color, flavor, and sugar are highly concentrated in as little juice as possible. When alcoholic fermentation has finished at 14% (sugars converted into alcohol), so much residual sugar remains that you are left with a sweet wine. Consequently, proportionally many more grapes are needed to produce the same amount of wine. This results in a very rich wine with an intense taste experience of ripe fruit.
Contreras Ruiz is a family business in the province of Huelva. The vineyards are situated on slopes between Doñana National Park and the Atlantic Ocean; both have a positive influence on the vineyards, and both are visible from the fields. The origins of the family bodega date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Many of the techniques have changed, but respect for the vineyard and for every bunch of grapes has remained the same. In recent years, they have converted a significant portion of their vineyards to organic viticulture. The winemaker is José Joaquín Contreras.
