Wow, this is a truly exceptionally good wine; what potential! This white wine from Bordeaux is full-bodied, yet without oak aging. We smell wild peach, mint, lime, wet pebbles, chalk, blood orange, anise, tomato leaf, and bay leaf. It has a high flavor intensity with a long finish. With every sip of the Despagne Biface Blanc, something new emerges. Truly a journey across the aroma wheel!
With the Despagne Biface Blanc, we wonder where the name ‘biface’ comes from. This delicious white Bordeaux owes its name to a special stone found in the vineyard. Anyone who takes a close look at the label will see a beautifully hewn stone. Upon closer examination, this stone turned out to be a 150,000-year-old axe with cutting edges on both sides, dating from the Paleolithic era. Quite a find, indeed.
At the same time, the Despagne Biface Blanc is also a blend of two equal parts grapes: 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon. A classic white blend from Bordeaux. The Sauvignon Blanc provides the fresh aromas and the Semillon the soft, waxy mouthfeel. A delicious combination that offers great versatility.
It is beautifully aromatic, so it can handle many strong flavors!
The House of Despagne has supplied British Airways with wine for the past 25 years. That speaks volumes about the quality. Furthermore, they are highly focused on sustainable business practices: continuously planting new trees and employing biodynamic viticulture techniques since 2010.
The grapes are grown on a terroir close to the Atlantic coast and therefore experience significant cooling, allowing them to ripen beautifully and slowly and develop many aromas. This is a major advantage, especially in these times of climate warming. Otherwise, the alcohol content would rise too high, which can make the wine rather heavy. Pressing takes place immediately after the harvest in a cooled environment to preserve all the freshness. For the same reason, fermentation and aging take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
