Nestled between the azure Mediterranean and the mighty Pyrenees, in the far south of France between Perpignan and the coast, lies the 15th-century farmhouse Domaine Lafage. They produce the most beautiful and very intense red wines. This Domaine Lafage Cuvée Nicolas is made from 100% Grenache has a deep dark ruby color. Great aromatic intensity on the nose, high concentration of red fruit. Pff, that's nice stuff, full of character! The taste is round, concentrated, endowed with silky tannins, with notes of blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, blueberries, chocolate, laurel and stretches over a very long length in the aftertaste.
This cuvée, named after their son, comes from our terraced vineyard at the foot of the Pyrenees, around the Aspres terroir, and from the plots of the upper Agly valley. Schisto-marbled soil, South/Southeast exposure. First, selection of plots with high quality potential. Next, the green harvest in the spring. Manual harvest in early October of fully ripe grapes, boxed, and sorting on the table at the reception. Vinification at low temperature.
Finally, 20% of the cuvée ages in Burgundian casks for 10 months.
De Côtes Catalanes is a large area in the southeast of France, enclosed by the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. In the past, large quantities of simple table wines came from here. Nowadays, young, promising winemakers have discovered that this is an ideal area for producing high-quality wines. This Domaine Lafage Cuvée Nicolas, with its moreover very low vineyard yield, is an excellent example of this.
Surrounding the centuries-old cellars lie no less than 140 hectares of vineyards on poor soils of schist (slate) and limestone. The estate is now run by the sixth generation of winemakers: the driven winemaking couple Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage. After traveling extensively around the world and having worked for several wine producers, Jean-Marc has returned to his family's wine estate.
