The Gaja Barbaresco DOCG is one of the top wines from Italy! The winery, along with this wine, consistently scores very high in the international wine world according to Wine Spectator (93), Vinous (96), Suckling (94), and Robert Parker (93).
A very elegant and complex wine produced from the best grapes from Gaja's 14 different Nebbiolo vineyards. Aromas of plums and ripe berries, leather and tar. Additionally, a light licorice flavor, beautiful wood notes, buttery tannins, and balanced acidity. Very intense. Everything is right about this wine.
The grapes are aged in oak barrels for 12 months per vineyard. They are then blended to age for another 12 months in large wooden oak barrels. Barbaresco wine is particularly elegant and bears witness to the subtle differences within the terroir. The wine is complex and intense, yet its elegance ensures it never becomes tiring. This is a wine for special moments or for a beautiful gift for the true connoisseur. Allow the wine to age for at least 10 years in your cellar or climate-controlled cabinet for the best result. Before serving, aerate in a decanter for at least 2 hours.
Among wine connoisseurs, Gaja is a household name! His working style is characterized by innovation and pioneering, but above all by never compromising on quality and, where necessary, deliberately deviating from the rules of the respective wine region. He limited yields and introduced French grape varieties and the use of French barriques, the latter to soften the wines. The family business produces exclusive wines of top quality. In total, the winery has 21.4 hectares of vineyards spread across 14 plots. These are situated at an altitude of 250 to 330 meters above sea level. The vines are on average 40 years old.
He markets his finest Barbarescos as Single Vineyard, 95% Nebbiolo supplemented with 5% Barbera. This is entirely against all the laws of the region, where 100% Nebbiolo is prescribed. As a result, he has to downgrade the wines to DOC Langhe. No problem, because by now the name Gaja is stronger worldwide than that of the overarching DOCG Barbaresco.
A lover of Italian wines simply must have drunk an aged wine from Angelo Gaja at least once in his life.
