Barolo from a top producer from the top vintage 2016!

In Barolo, 2016 is one of the best years of this century. The Gaja Barolo Dagromis is a fantastic example of what 2016 has to offer Barolo! Elegant and fresh with a beautiful balance between complexity and ripe, juicy fruit. The harmonious complexity of the Gaja Barolo ‘Dagromis’ 2016 is about to blossom: violets, rose petals, and white pepper rise from the glass. A pleasant freshness on the palate with juicy notes of red orange and grapefruit. Fragrant, medium-bodied, and well-balanced. An initially dry sensation from the oak, which softens over time. Prominent tannins, yet refined. Already very drinkable, but patience will be rewarded. This wine has promising aging potential. 2016 is a vintage to cherish!

2016 was a top year in Barolo

In Barolo, the quality of the wine can vary greatly from year to year. The weather therefore has a major influence! The winter of 2015–2016 was mild, with little rain in January and February. From late February 2016, temperatures finally dropped and remained low until the end of March. This late winter led to a delay of about 10 days in bud break. The spring was rainy and mild, resulting in good conditions for the vines. During the summer, the temperature remained stable without any particular heat peaks. There were only a few hot weeks in July, with temperatures fluctuating above 30°C but never exceeding 35°C. Very important for the success of 2016 was the temperature fluctuation between day and night: cool nights and warm days.

“Absolutely everything seemed to be right in Barolo,” according to Antonio Galloni of wine magazine Vinous. The 2016 vintage has everything it takes to produce magnificent, indeed spectacular, wines! Or, to quote Antonio Galloni once again: “… a vintage full of truly spectacular, breathtaking wines that captures all the pedigree that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of.”

    The undisputed king of Piedmont

Among wine connoisseurs, Gaja is a household name! The family business (now in its fifth generation) produces exclusive wines of top quality. In total, the winery has 21.4 hectares of vineyards spread across 14 plots. These are situated at an altitude of 250 to 330 meters above sea level. Moreover, the vines are on average 40 years old. The vineyards for the Gaja Barolo ‘Dagromis’ are located in Serralunga and La Morra. The Gaja Barolo ‘Dagromis’ is made from the Nebbiolo grape. The grape skins ferment in stainless steel tanks for three weeks. The aging process then begins with 12 months in barriques, followed by twelve months of further refinement in large oak barrels.
