Joseph Phelps' Insignia has been among the absolute top of California for years. No wonder, as the Insignia is produced only in exceptionally good vintages in Napa Valley. Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with a small amount of Petit Verdot and Malbec, the result is a very complex wine with layers of dark fruit, bitter chocolate, and fresh herbs. A gem to have in the cellar, as this wine only gets better with age! An exceptional aging potential of up to 40 years after the harvest!
In its youth, this top wine has a deep dark purple color in the glass. Decant the wine a few hours in advance so that it can breathe properly. Dark fruit, bitter chocolate, cassis, mocha, red roses, cedarwood, vanilla, and a hint of eucalyptus. A deliciously juicy structure with silky tannins and elegant acidity. As the wine ages, which it does very well, the color will turn redder, the tannins riper, and the complexity intensify. Provided you have the patience, of course!
This Joseph Phelps Insignia 2019 contains grapes from no fewer than 7 different vineyards of the Estate in Napa Valley, California. The 2019 Insignia consists of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with a little bit Petit Verdot (5%) and Malbec (2%). New for this vintage is that it contains grapes from the vineyard in the Oak Knoll District for the first time. The wine has been aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak.
Joseph Phelps, a contractor in Colorado, bought his first vineyards in Napa Valley in 1972. Together with German winemaker Walter Schug, he created the first Insignia in 1974, one of California's first Bordeaux blends. Since then, Insignia has been regarded as one of California's iconic wines. Today, Joseph Phelps Winery owns 11 vineyards in Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast, each with its own character.
