The desire to cherish the perfect qualities of the estate has, from the very beginning, been the philosophy of Ornellaia formed. Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot and the faithful expression of a unique terroir developed in harmony with nature. A wine to dream of or… to drink. With its usual deep ruby red color, the Ornellaia Rosso 2018 Bolgheri Superiore DOC has a lively and intense aromatic expression.
This is a distinctive feature of the vintage. Red fruit, but also citrus notes, hints of liquorice, and Mediterranean scrub combine to form the profile. On the palate, it immediately envelops the entire palate, and the perfect balance stands out. The tannins, both dense and silky in texture, fill the palate with elegance and precision. The finish gives the wine a sort of extra boost with a distinctly spicy backbone. This reinforces the sense of freshness and persistence.
The Ornellaia Rosso Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2018 is the stuff dreams are made of! You simply have to drink this at least once in your life. Preferably after about 10 years of cellar aging (although longer is fine too; this one will last until at least 2045). A gastronomic wine par excellence, perfect with grand dishes such as Beef Wellington and Venison Loin.
For the best food and wine adventure, however, you should pay a visit to their own restaurant in Switzerland. Ornellaia has opened its first restaurant with Bindella, its lifelong importer and ambassador in Switzerland, also known for his expertise in gastronomy. Ristorante Ornellaia is a very special place. The expertise in fine wines and hospitality will be fully displayed, as well as the stunning beauty of Bolgheri’s landscapes, making the whole an expression of artistic beauty; right near one of the world’s most luxurious and exclusive streets, Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. The Ornellaia Rosso Bolgheri Superiore DOC truly tastes its best there.
After a number of years in which winter seemed little more than a memory, 2018 brought a return to normal climatic conditions. Temperatures spent sufficient time below zero to allow the vines to begin their well-deserved winter rest. The spring will be remembered as one of the wettest in history, with three times as much rainfall and high temperatures in April. Despite the late budburst, weather conditions and rapid shoot growth ensured that the vines caught up and bloomed a week earlier than expected. Rain remained above average throughout the month of May and – to a lesser extent – June, and it was not until July that we got some rest, with a warm and dry month.
Veraison took place between July 22 and 25, and August was just as warm as the previous year, but slightly wetter. Sugars and acidity developed slowly, while the berries grew to larger sizes thanks to the high water content in the soil. September was warm and dry. Temperatures were higher than the seasonal average. Cooler nights allowed the vines to recover and retain aromas and acidity. The red grape harvest began on August 31 with the Merlot and ended on October 8 with the later-ripening varieties. A large volume of bottles of Ornellaia Rosso Bolgheri Superiore DOC could be produced, of very high quality.
