Grüner Veltliner is a grape that always pairs well with many dishes. Dry, but not acidic. Fruity, but not tropical. and always just enough “oomph”. Salads, fish, and naturally with Wiener Schnitzel. It goes with everything. Always in the right place. And of course, super tasty as an aperitif. The color of the Pfaffl Grüner Veltliner vom Haus shines in a characteristic, youthful straw yellow to light lemon yellow, interspersed with white-gold and greenish reflections. The aroma reveals beautiful, full-bodied notes of apricots and citrus fruits with floral accents of light blossoms and a fine note of spices reminiscent of white pepper. The taste is lively and fresh, round and harmonious; the acidity is well integrated but also imparts a fine mineral, lively character. The aromas of meadow flowers, apricots, and citrus fruits are also noticeable on the palate. The finish of the Pfaffl Grüner Veltliner vom Haus is fresh, persistent, and characterized by a lively, juicy interplay.
Here, the Pfaffl family proves once again that they understand Grüner Veltliner very well. And the press, too, surpasses itself with hymns of praise for the exceptional winery and its winemakers. While Roman Pfaffl Senior was primarily known as “Mr. Veltliner” and will go down in the annals of the Austrian wine industry as “Mr. DAC,” his son Roman Josef can already claim unofficial titles such as “Red Wine Crack in the White Wine Country” (Hotelerie Gastronomie Zeitung) or “Dr. Laurent.” In any case, they are clearly doing something right.
The history of the Lower Austrian winery Pfaffl tells the story of the rise of a small family business into one of Austria's finest wineries. In 1978, Roman Pfaffl took over his parents' farm in the municipality of Stetten, northwest of Vienna. There was already a vineyard there, but it was only 0.75 hectares in size. But then began Roman Pfaffl’s rapid rise to become a top winemaker in the Weinviertel: within two decades, with the support of his wife Adelheid, he transformed his mixed farm into a 20-hectare winery, on which he produced such outstanding Grüner Veltliner that he was named “Falstaff Winemaker of the Year”. Unofficially, experts had already given him the title “Mr. Veltliner”.
On January 30, 2017, the renowned magazine “Wine Enthusiast” invited guests to Miami Beach to present its 15 Wine Star Awards. For the first time in the awards’ 17-year history, the “European Winery of the Year 2016” prize, one of the internationally coveted titles, went to Austria. For the Pfaffl winery, the award was the culmination of a long success story full of accolades and prizes. Year after year, the white and red wines from the Pfaffl house attract international attention and are recognized accordingly.
In 2017 alone, the winery received seven awards from the gastronomic magazine “Selection”. In addition to the titles “Young Winemaker of the Year” and “Winery of the Year”, they also took first place in the categories “Red Wine National with Wood Ageing”, “Red Cuvées”, “Grüner Veltliner dry with Wood Ageing”, and “Riesling dry with wood ageing”. Pfaffl wines regularly receive top scores from international magazines such as Falstaff or Wine Enthusiast, as well as in reviews by famous critics such as Robert Parker and Andreas Larsson.
