There are 13 major wine regions in Germany, and these are located primarily in the southwest of the country. Rheinhessen, situated southwest of the Rhine River and the city of Mainz, is the largest. There are approximately 2,500 wineries.
People often think it is a flat area. However, Rheinhessen is actually a valley with rolling hills and differences in elevation.
Varied soils and the favorable climate make it possible to cultivate many grape varieties, both old and new. Many of Germany's aromatic, early-ripening new crosses were bred in Rheinhessen by Professor Georg Scheu, after whom the Scheurebe grape is named. The region also has the world's largest acreage planted with the ancient Silvaner variety, which is making a name for itself again. Other white wine varieties are also on the rise, particularly Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
In the past, it was a blend of white wines that was popular. Some may remember Rheinhessen as the birthplace of Liebfraumilch. This soft white wine was originally made from grapes planted in vineyards around the Liebfrauenkirche in Worms. Now, a new, young generation of local winemakers, who appreciate the ideal working conditions on these rolling hills, has drawn attention to itself in recent years for their excellent wines, including high-quality Rieslings.
Another recent trend is the rise of red wine, particularly supported by the Dornfelder grape variety. The acreage for red varieties has more than doubled in ten years. Now, a third of Rheinhessen's vineyards are planted with red grapes.
Winegrowers from Rheinhessen produce modern, uncomplicated wines and top-quality products. The Selection Rheinhessen quality label has existed since the 1990s – an ambitious class of fine, dry wines. This initiative is intended to promote authentic wines at the highest level.
