    A wonderfully accessible Rioja

The Rioja Baron de Ley Club Privado was originally intended only for the members of an exclusive Baron de Ley investors' club. After yet another lunch featuring heavy wines and many cigars, a lighter type of wine was developed at their request that would still possess all the well-known characteristics of a good Rioja. Made from 100% Tempranillo. Deliciously soft, round, and juicy, yet typically Rioja with aromas of ripe red fruit and spices, cedarwood, and vanilla. After a period of experimentation, Baron de Ley came up with a beautiful semi-crianza. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine ages for four months in American oak barrels and subsequently for another six months in the bottle. So, more fruit and less wood. And: low costs with a high return on drinking pleasure.

The Rioja Baron de Ley Club Privado has an intense ruby red color. Surprisingly ripe fruit on the nose, accompanied by fine spicy nuances from its time in the cellar. On the palate, it has good presence and mouthfeel, with soft, round tannins. A long finish that brings back the beautiful hints of ripe fruit. Not too heavy, but very drinkable with the typical Rioja character.

Pairs very well with charcuterie, spicy cheeses, meat or legume stews, roasted rabbit in Ibérico ham with lentils , game and mushrooms. You can also just sit by the fireplace before the meal. Classic wine with a nice hint of wood.

The Monastery of Imas, HQ of Baron de Ley

A visit to Baron de Ley is certainly worthwhile when you are in the area. Today, the Imas Monastery has not only become the headquarters of Barón de Ley; it is also home to some of its finest wines. The restoration of the historic building, carried out in 1995–1996, uses the furnishings to recreate the Golden Age of the house at the end of the 19th century.

Finally, the “cellar” is the highlight of a tour of the monastery building, located in the old cloister stable. A spectacular fusion of the old Benedictine tradition and filled with today’s magnificent wines. Six enormous French oak “foudres,” or fermentation vats, which are quite unique. A beautiful bottle cellar with iron railings and rows of dormant bottles, laid horizontally and filled with the best Barón de Ley wines. A feast for all the senses.
